North Bay Blooms

North Bay Blooms 2010

Getting ready for another great year.

Flowers, trees, garbage bags and pumpkins seeds, that pretty much sums up our plans for North Bay Blooms this summer.

We kick off this summer's program by handing out over 1,000 giant pumpkin seeds starting on Earth Day, April 22 to several primary schools around North Bay and through our sponsors. See  "the Great Pumpkin Contest" page for details and Bob's hot tips on how to grow your giant  pumpkin.

Saturday, May 8  we are partnering with Tim Horton's for "Community Clean Up Day" working out of the back parking area of Northgate Square  (look for the red tent).  Last year we had almost 30 volunteers pick up 50 bags of litter, abandoned tires and other debris around the Northgate Square and Laurentian Avenue area.  We start at 9:30 a.m., please join us if you can - complimentary gloves & bio-degradable bags will be provided.
Refillable water bottles are always a great idea and make more sense than disposable plastic bottles.

Tree North Bay takes place around the same time and this year we are partnering the Nipissing Stewardship Council and once again have been generously sponsored by TD Friends of the Environment. If you would like to help us plant trees or know of a location that could use a tree or two, please email us at   mayne@onlink.net.

Wednesday, May 12 will be the first of our weekly Wednesday Clean Up Nights. If you or your group can help out please let us know.

Front Yard Flower Competition starts by late June as Canada Post and our local mail carriers start to bring in nominations. The North Bay Horticultural Society help whittle down almost 150 nominees to the top ten and North Bay Master Gardeners help with the final choices for top three.

Saturday, July 17 will see the culmination of our gardening season with a hosted bus tour around town of out top ten gardens. Pick up locations last year were Marina Point, Empire Living Center and Casselholme and the morning tour around town is at no charge.

Patti from the Chamber of Commerce will helping each Friday with our "Business Garden of the Week"  and will be featured on Cogeco each Friday evening.

Looks like  another busy and fun growing season and all part of making North Bay Bloom!

All the best & thanks,

Chris Mayne
