North Bay Blooms

Wednesday Night Clean Ups

Wednesday, July 22               Rotary Club of North Bay

A record eight shopping carts were pulled out from Chippewa and Parks Creeks by the Rotary Club of North Bay, not to mention several tires and numerous other bits and pieces of junk and broken glass.
"The plastic bags were the worst and almost overwhelming" commented one Rotarian.  Once in the creek they sink and start to collect sand and gravel. Over the years in some parts of the creek the natuaral creek bed was almost lost to a layer of plastic bags from one bank to the other. " We had gone in expecting to focus on large items like tires and shopping carts but it really was the plastic bags that seemed to be everywhere"..

Thursday, July 16                                  Association for Community Living

Thanks to Joey, Jackie, Diane (with only one n!) Stacey, Bev & Mike (hiding back row) for a great clean up on College Drive.  The old Dave McKee riding trails and off road areas had become a prime dumpsite for a number of individuals with little regard for keeping these trails areas clean. Please call City of North Bay or Police if you notice someone dumping garbage inappropriately aound our community.

Wednesday, June 24    RBC Works Up a Sweat

Picture
RBC Stockdale Rd staff, including Deputy Mayor Peter Chirico, found themselves doing a neighbourhood clean up on the hottest, most humid day of the summer.  Thanks to everyone who showed up to help out and especially the the last volunters standing as pictured at left, who endured a fairly brutal afternoon's work out - thanks for pitching in!

Wednesday, June 24            Lakeshore Evangelical Mission Rolls up Their Sleeves

Picture
Members of the Lakeshore Evangelical Missionary Church collected 21 bags of garbage from the ditches and creeks along Marshall Ave and Booth Rd on Wednesday June 24, 2009, which was one of the hottest days of the year so far, with temperatures of 30oC outside, feeling like 37oC. Thank you to Kimberly Matthews for organizing this event and thank you to Destiny, Rachel, Isaiah, Ty, Kim, Chad, Holly, Avery, Phil, David, Angela, Sarah, Clayton, Yvonne, Derek, Emma, Brianna, Jacob and everyone else who came out to help clean up, we appreciate you taking the time to help out!

Wednesday, June 17                                          U Need a Cab helps out

Thank you to John & Catherine Strang for not only bringing out the whole office but the whole family aswell to clean up around Algonquin Avenue and the Bypass.  Twenty one bags of garbage were picked up plus two old election signs, and while it seemed like less than last year it still represents a lot of casual litter from pedestrians and motorists. Thanks for pitching in and keep up the great community work!

Wednesday, June 10       TD Canada Trust  & TD Friends of the Environment

TD Canada Trust & TD Friends of the  Environment pulled 26 bag of garbage out of the ditches and roadside around the Cassells St Beer Store and behind the TD Cassells St. Branch for one of our busiest clean up evenings this year. Thanks to Mandy Hampel for organizing and everyone helping out.  As a reminder to anyone considering a clean up in their neighbourhood, a number of drug paraphenelia pices were pulled from the bush, use thick gloves and boots when picking up and alwasy look at what yuo are picking up - never just sweep your hand through thick grass.

Wednesday, June 3              Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council

Greater Nipissing Stewardship Council did an awesome job this week along the Airport Road and Algonquin Avenue area.  Fourteen bags of litter were picked up in an area that had been cleaned up previously last year - frustrating that this is all new litter for persons simply to lazy to either either use a trash can or bring home their own garbage.  Thanks to Bill Hagborg of GNSC for rallying the group again this year.

Wednesday, May 27            Pulp and Paper Healthy and Safety Association

The PPSHA team was rained out for their first clean up night May 27 but pitched in Wednesday June 10 when the weather improved. Thanks to Micheline for all her help organizing the groups again this year and to everyone who came out to help clean up.  This is another part of town that despite being cleaned up last year the same area seemed to be just a bad again if not worse  with casual litter  - more than a little frustrating for everyone involved.

Thank you PPHSA for all of your hard work, names as best we could figure out, from left to right Ken, and in front of him Danielle, Susan, Jan, Gaetane, Micheline, and in red Bonnie, beside her Carol, Jean & Diane.

Wednesday, May 20              Big Brothers Big Sisters

Picture
In no particular order, thanks to Dawson, Heather, Meghan, K'ashe, Bryanna, River, Jessica, Tammy, Brook, Nancy & Judy for helping clean up around the Tweedsmuir Park area.  While the park itself was in great shape the ditches and brush areas behind some of the fast food restaurants and businesses in the area were littered with the usual plastic bottles, junk food packaging and assorted garbage.  Seven full bags of garbage were collected and sent on their way to the landfill rather than being left as an eyesore in the neighbourhood - appreciate everyone taking the time to help out!

Wednesday, May 13                               Friends of La Vase Portages

Thanks to Vic, Rick, Bernie, Kathryn, Fred  & Chris for setting aside an evening to clean up around the Brandy Lake parking area of La Vase Portages. Seems like any roadside parking area is an opportunity for some people to clean out their cars and chuck their junk in the bush.   Looks great for now, if anyone notices someone dumping debris or garbage please contact City of North Bay to enforce anti-litter bylaws.
